PHOTOS: Double celebration in Japan as thousands pay homage to the penis on Easter
While you all are busy celebrating Easter, people in Japan are actually busy celebrating a Penis festival.
Yep, you read that right.
The penis festival, also known as the Festival of the Steel Phallus – or Willy Festival – is an annual celebration held on the first Sunday of April at the Kanayama Shrine in Kawasaki, Japan.
It involves the display of various penis-shaped candy, chocolates, lollipops, and sculptures by young and old.
The festival actually celebrates fertility and also raises awareness about safe sex practices and funds for HIV charities.
It focuses around a penis-shaped shrine that prostitutes used to pray under to ask for protection against sexually transmitted diseases.
A huge iron dildo that sits in the Kanayama shrine is also a big part of the festival.
