Former Presidential Candidate Dele Momodu quits PDP for ADC

Dele Momodu, publisher of Ovation magazine and former presidential aspirant, has resigned his membership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), citing the hijack of the party by “anti-democratic forces”.

In a resignation letter dated July 17 and addressed to the PDP ward chairman in Ihievbe, Owan East Local Government Area of Edo State, Momodu said his exit from the party is both “simple and straightforward”.

“I wish to inform you of my decision to resign from our political party, PDP, with immediate effect,” he wrote. “My reason is simple and straightforward. Our party has been unarguably hijacked by antidemocratic forces, from within and outside, in broad daylight.”

Momodu also announced his intention to join the African Democratic Congress (ADC), a platform recently adopted by opposition coalition politicians seeking to unseat President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 general election.

“It is, therefore, honourable to abandon the carcass of the party to them while the majority of us earnestly sign up with the new coalition party known as the African Democratic Congress (ADC),” he added.

His resignation comes just hours after former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar also left the PDP, accusing the party of drifting away from the ideals upon which it was founded.

A staunch supporter of Atiku, Momodu played a prominent role in the PDP’s 2023 presidential campaign, serving as director of strategic communications. He had earlier contested the PDP presidential primary for the 2023 election but failed to gain traction. In 2011, he ran for president on the platform of the National Conscience Party.
