Over 40 suspected bandits killed as security operatives repel attack on Katsina community
A joint security operation involving local hunters and the Katsina State Community Watch Corps (KSCWC) has thwarted a large-scale bandit attack on Guga Village in Bakori Local Government Area of Katsina State, with more than 40 suspected bandits reportedly killed during the confrontation.
The attack occurred around 5:40 p.m. on Sunday when over 200 heavily armed bandits stormed the community in what security sources described as a coordinated reprisal attack.
According to security sources, the attackers were led by notorious bandit leader Idi Abasu Aiki and were reinforced by members of the Ado Aleru criminal network based in neighboring Zamfara State.
Intelligence reports indicated that the armed groups planned to overpower local hunters and KSCWC operatives defending Guga before advancing to Bakori town and nearby communities.
However, security personnel, acting on prior intelligence, launched a coordinated counteroffensive that resulted in an intense gun battle. The attackers were eventually forced to retreat after suffering heavy losses.
Security assessments put the number of suspected bandits killed at more than 40. Intelligence sources also indicated that about eight senior commanders linked to the criminal network were among those killed during the operation.
The sources further disclosed that Idi Abasu Aiki sustained serious gunshot wounds in the clash, although his condition had not been independently confirmed as of the time of this report.
The operation followed an earlier confrontation on July 7 at Dawan Laila Village, where members of the same criminal group reportedly suffered significant casualties during a clash with local security volunteers.
Following the latest operation, security agencies have launched clearance exercises to recover weapons and other equipment abandoned by the fleeing attackers. Surveillance across the area has also been intensified to prevent further incursions.
Confirming the operation, the Katsina State Government said five members of the local hunters’ team lost their lives after they were attacked while away from the frontline to attend to personal shopping activities.
The government described the deceased hunters as brave patriots who made the ultimate sacrifice in the defence of their communities and extended its condolences to their families.
Authorities added that normalcy has returned to Guga Village and surrounding communities, reaffirming their commitment to sustained joint security efforts to safeguard lives and property across Katsina State.
