Over 24 killed as gunmen storm Adamawa community, burn homes
No fewer than 24 people have been confirmed dead following a deadly attack on Kirchinga village in Madagali Local Government Area of Adamawa State.
The assailants reportedly stormed the community on Tuesday, setting houses, shops and places of worship ablaze. Several residents were injured in the assault, while others remain unaccounted for.
Amnesty International condemned the killings, describing the incident as “horrifying.” Although Boko Haram has not officially claimed responsibility, the organisation said the pattern of the attack and testimonies from survivors suggest the involvement of the extremist group.
According to Amnesty, bodies were scattered across the village hours after the attack, with many buildings still smouldering. The group called on authorities to intensify efforts to safeguard vulnerable communities and ensure those responsible are held accountable.
Meanwhile, the Adamawa State Police Command said the Commissioner of Police, Dankombo Morris, carried out an on-the-spot assessment of the affected areas.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the police spokesperson, Suleiman Nguroje, said the commissioner led a team of senior officers to evaluate security deployments and enhance coordination with other security agencies, particularly the military, to prevent further attacks.
