In Pictures: Otti Launches Abia Electricity Regulatory Agency to Oversee Power Sector
Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has inaugurated the Governing Board of the Abia State Electricity Regulatory Agency (ASERA), a significant step toward power sector reform and regulatory independence in the state.
The board’s establishment follows the recent passage of the Abia State Electricity Law of 2025, which empowers ASERA to oversee and drive the institutional framework of the electricity market across the state.

In a statement issued by Dodoh Okafor, the Governor’s Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, the board is expected to “set a new standard for efficiency and competitiveness in the electricity value chain in this part of the world.”
Members sworn in at the ceremony include: Engr. Iheanyi Y. Weze, Onwuegbule Karen Eberechukwu, and Dr. Joy Oti.
Okafor noted that two additional members of the board will be inaugurated at a later date.

He also emphasized that the appointed members bring with them “vast experiences and commitment,” drawn from reputable national and global institutions in the energy and allied sectors.
The creation of ASERA aligns with Governor Otti’s broader push to decentralize power supply and improve energy access across Abia. With the power sector now partially devolved to subnational entities under the 2023 Electricity Act, the state seeks to build a regulatory environment that encourages private investment, enforces standards, and ensures consumer protection.
