Omo-Agege: Senate reconvenes, urges IG of Police to recover mace in 24 hours
The plenary at the National Assembly was disrupted by suspended Senator Ovie Omo-Agege and some suspected thugs on Wednesday morning.
Omo-Agege and the suspected thugs allegedly invaded the chamber, causing commotion and disappearing with the mace.
The Senator has been fighting his colleagues over the bill on elections reshuffle, which he said was aimed at intimidating President Buhari. He was recently suspended for ninety days.
The upper chamber of the National Assembly has tasked the police to recover the staff of authority and called the Senator’s alleged act “treasonable”.
“Today, some armed hoodlums led by suspended Senator Ovie Omo-Agege walked into the Senate’s plenary and seized the symbol of authority of the upper legislative chamber, the mace,” a statement by the Chairman, Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Senator Aliyu Sabi-Abdullahi, read.
“This action is an act of treason, as it is an attempt to overthrow a branch of the Federal Government of Nigeria by force, and it must be treated as such.
“All security agencies must stand on the side of due process and immediately mobilise their personnel to retrieve the mace and apprehend the mastermind and the perpetrators of this act.
“This action is also an affront on the legislature, and the leadership of the House has come to express their support against this action.
“The Senate is now in an executive session. An updated statement will be released immediately after the closed door session.”
Despite the commotion caused by the suspected thugs, the Senate managed to reconvene for the plenary, and the Electoral Act 2010 Amendment Bill is being considered for second reading.
