OAU students arrested for protesting forceful eviction from hostel regain freedom
Two students of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife who were arrested for causing unrest the institution have regained their freedom.
Gbenga Oloruniran, a 400 level student of Geography and Jimoh Oladipupo, a 300 level student of Biochemistry, had been accused of assaulting hostel officials following forceful eviction of students over a week ago.
They were released in the early hours of Thursday after spending a week at Koshere Prison, Ile-Ife.
Three other students arrested alongside Oloruniran and Oladipupo had been released on bail on Tuesday.
All five students were arraigned at a magistrates’ court last Thursday in Ile-Ife by the police over alleged harassment of a hostel warden on campus.
The students were accused of assaulting hostel officials who were implementing a university directive to evict all students from the hostel.
The management of the institution had forced out students from their hostels with claims it wanted to renovate the buildings.
The students, however, denied the accusations saying they only protested the forceful eviction.
