NJC holds meeting over Onnoghen’s sack, demands answers from both camps

The National Judicial Council has convened to discuss the circumstances surrounding the controversial dismissal of the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen.

The CJN was removed over allegations leveled against him for failing to declare his asset as required by the law.

Although the case was still ongoing at the court, President Buhari went ahead to suspend Onnoghen and replaced him with the current Acting CJN, Justice Tanko Mohammed.

The issue generated a lot of controversy as some people believed that the president had no legitimate right to sack the head of another arm of the government without Senate approval or proper procedure through the National Judicial Council.

In order to resolve the grievances surrounding the incident, NJC engaged in a meeting on Tuesday to deliberate on the appropriate line of action.

At the end of the meeting, the Council decided to seek clarifications from Onnoghen regarding the reason why he failed to declare his asset through a letter in which he’s to respond within one week.

In the same vein, the Acting CJN, Mohammed was also demanded to explain why he allowed himself to be sworn-in by the President without the recommendation of the Council, as the Constitution requires.
