Nine Northern States on Alert As Heavy Flood Looms
The Federal Ministry of Environment’s National Flood Early Warning Centre (FEW Center) has issued a fresh flood alert to nine Northern states in Nigeria, warning of possible heavy rainfall and flooding between August 25 and 29, 2025. The affected states include Adamawa, Bauchi, Borno, Gombe, Jigawa, Kano, Katsina, Sokoto, and Zamfara.
The states of Bauchi, Gombe, Jigawa, Kano, and Katsina have also been placed on red alert. In Adamawa, the towns of Mubi, Shelleng, and Abba-Kumbo are under threat, while in Katsina, the towns of Kaita, Bindawa, and Katsina town are at risk. Other affected towns include Nafada in Gombe, Ngala in Borno, Sumaila in Kano, Makira in Sokoto, Anka in Zamfara, Azare and Jama’are in Bauchi, and Gwaram in Jigawa.
The FEW Center has urged stakeholders to provide timely reports on emerging flood situations across the affected states. The center had earlier issued warnings to towns across seven Northern states and advised communities along the River Niger’s flood plains from Jebba to Lokoja to evacuate due to rising water levels.
