Nigeria’s “oldest prisoner” pleads for mercy as he celebrates 100th birthday

Mr. Celestine Egbunuche is said to be the oldest Nigerian prisoner in Enugu Maximum Prisons. He turned 100 years old on Saturday, August 4th.

The Akokwa, Imo State native was arrested alongside his son, Paul, and a relative who is 87 years old, after engaging in a fight over a piece of land. The fight reportedly led to the death of one person.

Celestine has reportedly spent over 17 years in prison, and an NGO, Global Society for Anti-Corruption (GSAC) is trying to push for his release.

According to GSAC, Celestine has been suffering from diabetes for some years now.

The appeal for his release as well as his relatives has been made by GSAC to state Governor Rochas Okorocha.
