Nigerians furious as deaf teacher accused of raping 6-month-old girl is granted bail
A 40-year-old deaf teacher in Potiskum, Yobe State, allegedly raped a 6-month-old baby until her intestines ruptured.
The teacher, identified as Shaaibu Yakubu Abdullahi, was arrested on September 1 by men of the Nigeria Security and Defence Corps (NSCDC).
NSCDC said the deaf teacher allegedly conspired with a 10-year-old student who brought the baby to him from a neighbour’s house.
Although Abdullahi initially denied the allegation, he was identified by the 10-year-old student through a group picture of staff and students taken in the school.
The suspect was arrested by the police after the case was reported by a non-governmental organization, National Council of Women Society (NCWS).
The matter has also been reported to the state’s Ministry of Justice for prosecution as the case needs a professional in sign language to interpret.
The baby girl was taken to the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital for examination and proper treatment.
People are angry the accused has been released on bail. Speculations are out saying, he was probably released because he is physically challenged, which (according to them) is absolutely not meant to be.
