Nigerians defy heavy police presence, protest against economic hardship
Nigerians have defied heavy police presence at the National Stadium, Surulere to gather for a peaceful protest on Monday morning.
The protest, which was initially spearheaded by Nigerian singer 2face Idibia, was called off at the last minute following Lagos State Police Command’s insistence it would not allow it to hold.
NewsroomNG gathered that operatives of the Police Command arrived at the venue early Monday morning, but undaunted protesters have gathered with placards detailing their dissatisfaction at the Buhari-led government.
“People die daily from lack of basic, affordable healthcare,” one of the placards read.
Another read, “There can’t be a set of rules for the poor and another set for the rich.”
The protesters intend to march to the National Theatre, Iganmu.
President Buhari remains on an “indefinite vacation” in the UK.
