Nigeria Produces Below OPEC Quota as May Output Falls to 1.45m bpd

Nigeria’s daily crude oil production fell by 2.20 per cent to 1,452,941 barrels per day (bpd) in May 2025, down from 1,485,700 bpd recorded in April, according to new data from the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC).

The latest crude oil and condensate production report released by the NUPRC shows that while the country remained just below its Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) quota, overall production still declined. The agency said the output for the month represented “97 per cent of the 1.5 million bpd quota set for Nigeria by the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC).”

When condensates—light liquid hydrocarbons derived from natural gas—are included, total daily oil production dipped slightly from 1.68 million bpd in April to 1.65 million bpd in May.

Condensates are defined by the NUPRC as a mixture of light liquid hydrocarbons, “usually separated from a natural gas stream at the point of production (field separation) when the temperature and pressure of the gas are dropped to atmospheric conditions.”

According to the commission, “The daily average production in May was 1,657,435 barrels per day, comprising both Crude oil (1,452,941 bopd) and condensate (204,493 bopd).”

It further noted that, “Lowest and Peak Combined crude oil and Condensate Production in May were 1.61 million bopd and 1.810 million bopd respectively.”

The dip in output comes amid global market shifts. On Friday, international oil prices surged by over 7 per cent—the highest in more than four months—boosting Brent crude to $74.85 a barrel and US WTI to $73.61.
