Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso Officially Exit ECOWAS Amid Regional Uncertainty

The military-led governments of Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso have formally withdrawn from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), marking a significant rupture in the regional bloc’s stability.

The decision, which became effective Wednesday, follows months of political tension and unsuccessful mediation efforts to keep the alliance intact. ECOWAS confirmed the trio’s departure in an official statement but emphasised that diplomatic doors remain open.

Despite their formal withdrawal, ECOWAS has urged its member states to continue recognising passports and identity cards issued by the departing nations under the bloc’s insignia. Additionally, trade and investment policies, including those under the ECOWAS Trade Liberalisation Scheme (ETLS), will still apply to goods and services from the three nations.

The bloc also reaffirmed its commitment to free movement and residency rights for citizens of Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso within ECOWAS territories. Officials from these nations will continue receiving support from the organization during the transition period.

“These arrangements will be in place until the full determination of the modalities of our future engagement with the three countries by the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government,” the statement read.

To prevent further economic and social disruptions, ECOWAS has established a special commission tasked with engaging in talks with the three nations. The move aims to avoid confusion and minimize potential hardship for businesses and citizens affected by the departure.

The withdrawal follows a deadline set at the 66th Ordinary Session of ECOWAS Heads of State and Government in Abuja last month, where ECOWAS Commission President Alieu Touray outlined final mediation efforts and the terms for a permanent exit.
