National Grid Collapses Again as Gas Producers Reportedly Halt Supply to GenCos
The Nigerian national grid has collapsed for the 12th time this year, plunging millions of homes into darkness.
Although the reason for the collapse has not been officially disclosed, reports by the Nigeria National Grid on its X account (formerly Twitter), where real-time updates on electricity distribution are shared, had earlier announced that a blackout was imminent following the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority’s directive to gas producers to cease supplying gas to indebted generation companies (GenCos).
According to the statement, the debt owed by the generation companies amounts to N2 trillion.
“The federal government and some GenCos currently owe over N2 trillion in legacy debts to gas producers in Nigeria,” the statement, seen by Neusroom, reads in part.
This year, Nigerians have grappled with frequent collapses of the national grid, with three occurring within seven days in October.
