MTN Is Raising The Next Generation Of World Leaders Through Its Scholarships

In a digital world where innovation is needed for societies to thrive, MTN is building an ecosystem of scholars, nay problem solvers through the MTN Scholarships. This should not be a surprise as the organisation has always been at the fore in driving growth and good support
system.

This is visible through the MTN scholarships awarded annually to recognize and reward high performing students. It is made up of the MTN Science and Technology Scholarship Scheme (STSS) and the MTN Scholarship Scheme for Blind Students (SSBS). Indeed, some of our very best who have built amazing careers in governance and the professional world are scholarship recipients. Instances of this are Akinwunmi Adeshina, President of the African Development Bank (AfDB), and Dr. Okonjo Iweala, Nigeria’s Former Minister of Finance currently vying to lead the World Trade Organisation (WTO).

Initiatives like the MTN Scholarship Scheme will go a long way in preparing the next set of technocrats that can stand their own across the world. More still, the MTN Foundation also organizes an employability workshop for MTN Scholars to learn and prepare for expectations of a thriving career.

For Komolafe Peter Irewole, the scholarship he was awarded in 2015 enabled him to work harder to improve his academics and impacted his mindset positively. Although he was already maintaining a high-grade point average, the scholarship offered him the boost he needed to
come out top of his class. “Before the scholarship award, my CGPA was below the first-class mark. The fact that I had access to more personal study materials made my CGPA cross over to first-class. I eventually graduated as the best student in my class (MST ‘18).”

Also worthy of note is that other 1st class graduates of my class are MTNF scholars. This shows that providing the tools needed for Nigerian scholars to thrive, goes a long way in ensuring their academic success.

In addition to offering scholarship opportunities for Nigerian youths, MTN also created the Youth Entrepreneurship Development Programme (YEDP) to aid MTN scholars for entrepreneurship. This initiative started in 2019, with a selection process that streamlined hundreds of applicants to 75 students. MTN Scholars are also treated to an employability workshop where they are introduced to relevant skills needed to progress in the workplace.

They are encouraged to harness their individual strengths while carrying out their professional duties. Under both scholarship schemes, eligible students across the country are awarded scholarships worth N200, 000 annually till graduation as long as they meet the prerequisite grade. MTN Foundation has continued to contribute to youth empowerment in the education sector through training, mentorship, and financial support through the years. The scholarship scheme has awarded over 3,000 scholarships to Nigerians.
