Missing Schoolgirls: Angry Dapchi residents stone Yobe governor’s convoy

Angry residents of the Dapchi community, on Thursday, pelted Yobe state Governor Ibrahim Gaidam’s convoy over the disappearance of at least 90 schoolgirls.

The girls are feared to have been abducted by the Boko Haram terrorist sect on Monday.

Aggrieved parents have been thronging the school’s premises since Wednesday, longing for positive news over the whereabouts of their children.

There had been false conflicting reports over the situation, with the Yobe state government declaring Wednesday night that the girls had been found.

The claim was later retracted and dismissed as false.

As residents of the affected community continue to grow impatient with the government, they displayed their anger by pelting the governor’s convoy on his visit to the area yesterday.

One of the vehicles damaged by the angry residents.

Some aides and government officials were reportedly injured as vehicle windshields were shattered. Some officials in the convoy were reportedly seen with bloodstained clothes.

Security operatives were said to have been forced to fire teargas into the crowd in a bid to disperse them.

Information Minister Lai Mohammed said he has visited the community and that there was still confusion over actual number of missing students.

“Since the incident happened, the army and other security agencies have swung into action and have been combing every nook and cranny,” Mohammed said.

“So far, we cannot say the number of people that are missing because people are still reporting or calling that they are safe. We will need a few more days so we can give an exact figure of those missing.”

Students of the school were said to have been ordered by their teachers to run to safety when the terrorist sect stormed the school on Monday, but a roll-call conducted the day after had revealed several of the students had not returned.
