These men served Nigeria by putting their own lives on the line, and making their families vulnerable to bereavement.

Mr Oguni (far right) said pensioners don't trust the Military Pension Board.

They are retired Nigerian soldiers.

Their loyalty to defending Nigeria’s territorial integrity was never in question.

Years after they retired from the military, they still can’t rest. They have to carry placards and all to protest alleged injustice in the system that should now be repaying them.

There is a Military Pension Board (MPB) and this board short-changes military pensioners, the protesters say.

The retired soldiers invaded Community Road, Allen Avenue area of Lagos to protest what they fear is the shady way their pensions are being handled.

Is this what they get after sacrificing so much for Nigeria?

They say the MPB may be conniving with Nigeria’s Pension Commission (PENCOM) and other pension bodies to defraud military pensioners.

Air Warrant Officer Peter Oguni (Retd.), the liaison officer for military pensioners resident in Lagos State said the following in an exclusive chat with Newsroom on Tuesday.

We want our pension to be harmonised. We want the monies of soldiers that were deducted from military contributory pension to be refunded in full. The MPB, the pension commission and pension fund administrators have not come to tell us where our money is.

We also want our pension arrears from 2010 to be enhanced to 53% not 23% and we want the whole arrears paid to us.

We want the MPB to be audited and investigated immediately. We want it reorganised so that retired military officers and personnel, not serving officers, can man the board.

We want the board investigated. We don’t trust them.

We were told that the MPB held an interactive session with stakeholders. Who are the stakeholders and how ere they chosen?

We don’t trust that meeting. We want the presidency to look into the military pension board as constituted now; we are not sure they are paying us all the government approved for us.

They cannot speak for us. We want retired officers to man that place.

  • Ignorance, sheer ignorance. What has the National Pension Commission (PenCom) got to do with military pension?
The Military Pensions Board is not a department or subsidiary of PenCom neither does it report to PenCom. The two organisations’ operations are like two parallel lines that cannot meet.
Therefore, the connivance allegation is baseless and sheer falsehood and a misrepresentation of facts meant to further confuse the public and create a bad image for pension administration in the country, particularly, under the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS)?
