Gov Mbah approves N80,000 minimum wage for Enugu workers
Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State has approved the payment of N80,000 as minimum wage for civil servants in the South-East state.
The Governor announced the decision in a statement shared on his X account on Thursday, October 24, 2024.
Mbah joined other governors who have surpassed the N70,000 threshold specified in the new National Minimum Wage Act signed recently by President Bola Tinubu.
He said the new wage comes into effect in October while appreciating the state workers for their sacrifices and endurance.
The Governor added that the gesture aligns with his promises to the Enugu people during his campaign for the exalted office.
“I have just approved a minimum wage of N80,000 for Enugu workers, effective October 2024.
“We appreciate the hard work and sacrifices of the state’s workforce and will continue to prioritise their welfare in line with our campaign promises. Tomorrow is here,” the post reads.
Similarly, Governor Alex Otti of Abia announced two days ago that the state workers will start receiving a new minimum wage of N70,000 in October.

Mbah joins Lagos, Rivers, others to pay over 70k minimum wage
The development comes barely 24 hours after Mbah’s colleague in Akwa Ibom State, Umo Eno, announced a new minimum wage of N80,000 for civil servants in the South-South state.
Recall that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu had on October 16, announced that the minimum wage for public sector workers in Lagos State would be N85,000.
Sanwo-Olu stressed that the threshold was pegged at that rate not to rival other states but to show the capacity of Nigeria’s commercial capital.
Two days later, Governor Siminalyi Fubara matched his Lagos counterpart by announcing an N85,000 minimum wage for civil servants in Rivers State.
After months of bickering and disagreements between the government, the organised private sector on the one hand, and the organised labour on the other, President Tinubu signed into law the new minimum wage bill in July, increasing the national benchmark from N30,000 to N70,000.
