Mandela’s grandson, 24, in jail for allegedly raping 15-year-old girl
Police have confirmed that one of former President Nelson Mandela’s grandsons has appeared in the Johannesburg Magistrates Court on rape charges.
The 24-year-old is accused of raping a 15-year-old girl at a pub in Greenside, north of Johannesburg, earlier this month.
He was arrested over the weekend after the teenager opened the case against him, South Africa’s Eyewitness News reports.
The police’s Mashadi Selepe says he’ll stay in custody until his case resumes on Friday.
“Yes it can be confirm that he appeared briefly in court and the case was remanded to Friday for a formal bail application.”
In June, another one of Mandela’s grandsons, Mandla, received a suspended sentence in the Mthatha Magistrates Court.
The Mvezo chief was previously found guilty of assaulting a local teacher in a road rage incident in 2013.
The defence had told the court Mandla was the family breadwinner and a first time offender, but the prosecution wanted the African National Congress Member of Parliament to be sent to prison.
Mandla had been convicted of assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm, an offence that could result in a jail term.
He was, however, last week granted leave to appeal his assault conviction.
