Newly sworn-in President of the United States, Donald Trump is set to fulfill one of his campaign promises by mounting a Mexican border wall.

CNN gathers that Trump, amid resistance and backlash, will begin the roll out of immigration actions on Wednesday.

The President’s moves are also expected to involve issues related to refugees and visas.

In his allusion to the move, Trump said in a tweet on Tuesday: “Big day planned on NATIONAL SECURITY tomorrow. Among many other things, we will build the wall!”

Trump aims to combat insecurity and terrorism by minimising migration of foreigners, mostly from Muslim countries into America.

During his campaign, he proposed to build a “great, great wall” along the US-Mexico border, while also calling for a “complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States” until the US government could properly vet people coming in.

The Republican President will meet with Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto at the White House next week. Trump maintains Mexico would pay for the wall after it is initially paid for with a congressionally approved spending bill.

Trump’s press secretary, Sean Spicer said on Monday that Trump will clamp down on illegal immigrants in the US.

“First and foremost, the President’s been very, very clear that we need to direct agencies to focus on those who are in this country illegally and have a record — a criminal record or poses a threat to the American people,” Spicer said.

“That’s where the priorities going to be.”

Reports say there will likely be an exception in Trump’s intended clampdown on refugees however, as Christians fleeing persecution from Muslim-majority nations could be favourably considered.
