Magistrates, lawyers run for dear lives as prison guards open fire on escaping suspect
Policemen in Ondo state had arrested an okada man (commercial bicycle operator) for plying his trade beyond the stipulated time of the day.
The man was arraigned in court, Thursday, and granted bail by the Magistrate Court. He could not meet the conditions of his bail.
What happened next got everyone scared and running.
As prison guards tried escorting him into a prison van to be conveyed to Olokuta Prison, the okada rider bolted.
The prison guards responded by mounting a chase and shooting sporadically, reports say.
Court workers were reportedly so scared of the unfolding chaos they ran for safety. Magistrates were not left out.
The okada man was reportedly rearrested and actually shot. Witnesses could not confirm if the man, now bleeding, was taken to the hospital.
But they did say he was hurriedly pushed into the prison van and taken to Nigerian Prison at Olokuta, Akure.
Sources told local media he was later thrown into solitary confinement.
The incident happened at the premises of Magistrate Court located at Olokuyade House, Akure, ran towards Oshinle quarters, Akure in Ondo State.
