Liverpool Edge Chelsea in Thriller at Anfield
Liverpool inflicted defeat on Chelsea in their English Premier League clash on Sunday.
The Reds ran out 2-1 winners in the late kick-off at Anfield.
Goals from Mohammed Salah and Curtis Jones, either side of a Nicolas Jackson goal, helped the Reds to victory.
The first half began with many fouls and both teams sizing each other up.
The tie soon opened up when a ball over the top of the Chelsea defence caused the Blues problems and a penalty was awarded to Liverpool after Colwill fouled Diego Jota in the box.
Mo Salah scored the penalty that gave Liverpool the lead in the 29th minute.
Liverpool was awarded a penalty just as the half was about to end, Robert Sanchez, in goal for Chelsea, looked to have impeded the movement of Curtis Jones in the box.
The Video Assistant Referee (VAR) looked at it and instructed the on-field Referee, John Brooks, to go over to the monitor to review his earlier call.
After much review, the Referee rescinded the yellow card shown to Sanchez and revoked the penalty.
Both sides went into the break, 1-0 to the hosts.
The second 45 began more or the same as both sides were able to even each other out.
However, just 3 minutes after the restart, Moises Caicedo played in a lovely through ball to Nicolas Jackson to slot home from a one-on-one position.
While the Referee heeded his linesman’s call for offside, VAR, again, intervened and ruled it onside, 1-1 apiece.
In emphatic fashion, Liverpool responded two minutes later, another long ball over the top cutting out Colwill and Tosin Adarabioyo, and leaving Curtis Jones with acres of space to slot home past Sanchez for the lead.
Chelsea probed for the equalizer, with substitute, Pedro Neto, looking lively and almost playing substitute, Nkunku, in for the leveller.
In the end, Liverpool saw out the game to earn all three points on the day.
The win sees Liverpool maintain their lead at the top of the table, with Chelsea down to 6th.
