Lagos water scarcity: OPC member threatens to machete teacher as public tap hustle go ugly
As water wells go dry in Somolu and Bariga areas of Lagos State, residents are left at the mercy of unreliable public water providers, “expensive” water vendors and problematic community water services.
A state-employed teacher got into trouble, Tuesday morning, at a community water tap in Ifelodun area of Bariga-Somolu.
“There were lots of people trying to fetch water at the tap,” a teacher who doesn’t want to be named told NewsroomNG after the incident.
“I saw some women with multiple containers fetching water without allowing others do so. I spoke up about the anomaly urging them to think about their fellow humans.
“That was when one man who claimed to be an OPC member shouted at me asking what right I had to speak. That I disrespected him by doing so.
“I calmly apologised and was about turning away when he shouted again threatening to machete me to death.
“He said he would kill me and nothing would happen,” the teacher, who was still on holiday, said.
We were unable to reach the alleged OPC member.

Such rancour is not uncommon in the area whenever water becomes scarce. Residents who “don’t like trouble” say they avoid such incidents by patronising truck-pushing water vendors.
There are households with wells in the area but the wells lack water at the moment owing to the dry season.
