The Lagos State Government has announced the formation of a medical panel to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death of Waheed Ayilara, the Commissioner of Police for Akwa Ibom State. Ayilara, who assumed his role in February 2024, passed away on Thursday at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) due to complications related to prostate cancer.

Akin Abayomi, the Lagos State Commissioner for Health, released a statement on Saturday confirming that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu had ordered a thorough investigation into the events leading to Ayilara’s death. The investigation comes in response to concerns over the timing of his death, which occurred shortly after what was initially reported as an uneventful surgical procedure.

The medical panel, headed by Professor Adetokunbo Fabanwo, Chief Medical Director of LASUTH, has been tasked with reviewing the clinical details of the case. The panel is expected to submit a comprehensive report within seven days.

“We understand the grief and concern this tragic news has caused,” Abayomi stated. “The Lagos State Government is committed to ensuring a full and transparent investigation to provide clarity on the circumstances of his passing.”

Ayilara was recognized for his exemplary leadership and commitment, which earned him respect both within the police force and in the communities he served.

“The loss of Commissioner Ayilara is deeply felt, not only by his family and the police force but by the entire nation,” Abayomi added.
