Lagos: Mother of stranded newborn twins reappears, says “I’m dying”
After kindhearted Nigerians helped foot medical bills for delivery of stranded newborn twins, the mother has opened up on why she “abandoned” the babies.
Sarah Ademola said she left her babies in the hospital because of her own health. She said doctors told her she would not be treated until she paid her outstanding debt.
Felken Maternity Centre in Lagos demanded N300,000. Sarah and husband, Adeyemi, could afford only half the amount.
“After we borrowed N70,000 from the cooperative society, they still didn’t attend to me,” Sarah said.
“I had to run away to find solution to my health. I am in a place where they are treating me now. Please pray for me to survive. I am dying. I don’t want to die. I want to live to take care of my babies.
“I want to reap the fruit of my labour,” she said.
After the report initially hit the news on Thursday, some Nigerians reached out to the family.
Among those who showed interest were the wife of the Lagos State Governor, Bolanle Ambode; a member of the Senate representing Lagos East, Senator Gbenga Asafa; a retired military officer, Gen. Oviemo Ovadje; and non-governmental organisations.
Asafa donated N100,000 to the babies and promised another N50,000 for their upkeep. He did this because the family resided within his senatorial district, a spokesperson said.
The babies’ father expressed gratitude on behalf of the family. He said:
“We are grateful to Nigerians. We have found the mother of the twins, but the problem is that she is terribly sick and has been taken to her hometown in Agbowa.”
The twin babies are doing fine, and let’s remember their mother needs our prayers.
