Lagos Judiciary Begins Coroner’s Inquest into Fire That Claimed 10 Lives at Afriland Towers
The Lagos State Judiciary has fixed October 14, 2025, for a coroner’s inquest into the tragic fire incident at Afriland Towers that claimed 10 lives last month.
The move follows a formal request by Femi Falana Chambers, which petitioned the authorities to investigate the circumstances surrounding the fatal blaze.
The fire broke out on September 16 at the six-storey commercial complex located on Broad Street, Lagos Island, which houses major institutions including the United Bank for Africa (UBA), the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), United Capital Plc (UCAP), and other businesses.
The incident resulted in the deaths of four FIRS staff members and six employees of UCAP, prompting public calls for accountability and a review of fire safety standards in commercial buildings.
The inquest will provide an opportunity to establish the sequence of events, identify any lapses in emergency response or building safety protocols, and determine whether negligence or other factors played a role in the incident.
More details are expected to emerge when the proceedings begin later this month.
