Lagos: Drama in Allen as “evil landlord petitions state officials” to lock jobless woman’s shop

“Heartless people. Wicked people. What they are doing is very wrong. If you go thief dem go put you for prison. If you do business an wahala. Which road person go follow?” – Comfort Daniel, a trader.

After Comfort Daniel lost her job late 2016, a landlord in Community Road, Allen area of Lagos decided to help her cope with life. The man gave her a container shop space at the front of his house.

No sooner had Comfort started filling the shop with goods she managed to buy than government officials stormed the area to seal the space.

Officials also sealed this shop located close to the entrance of the street.

Officials gave Comfort one month to remove her goods from the shop and move the structure from the area.

“I’m just doing my job,” an official of the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) sealing the shop told NewsroomNG. “It’s from the Lagos State Government. I received the petition and I have to do my job”.

The incident happened on Wednesday afternoon. Officials also sealed another shop located near the entrance to the street.

After her pleas and those of the landlord who gave her the space on his own property failed to stop the government officials, Comfort burst into tears.

“Sorry, we will resolve this,” an old woman said hugging the upset “victim”.

Comfort was so upset she cried.

A source in the area told our correspondent Comfort was the “victim of our evil landlord association chairman” whom she said had been “problematic for everyone in this community”. His name is Tunde Agbaje.

“Since he became chairman about five years ago, he has been giving us problems,” our source said.

The landlord who helped Comfort out said he did so “because of the current economic situation” adding that he couldn’t understand why anyone would want to stop a hardworking woman from earning her daily bread.

“After all, the shop is on my property so I don’t understand,” the compassionate landlord said.

When we asked Agbaje if he petitioned the government to seal Comfort’s shop, he didn’t answer our questions. He offered only threats.

Oga stop there, don’t interfere in an affair that doesn’t concern you,” Agbaje ranted as our correspondent took note.

“Nobody told you the order is from me. If you say that I will sue you to court. You understand English? You understand, right? My name is Tunde Agbaje.

“Why are you calling my number? Please don’t ever call this number again. Don’t ever call this number. I will save this your number now and send it through the network to verify your real identity and I will sue you to court.

“Don’t ever call this number again! I want to save your number now and tell the security agents in order to know your true identity,” he dropped the call after issuing the threats.

Residents told us people are allowed to set up shops in front of their houses in nearby Ogundana Street.
