Kremlin Awaits U.S. Signals for Putin-Trump Summit Amid Ukraine Crisis
The Kremlin stated Monday it remains in a holding pattern, awaiting “signals” from Washington to finalize a potential meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump. Both leaders signaled openness to talks last week to enf the Russia-Ukraine war but have yet to outline specifics.
“So far, we have not received any signals from the Americans. The readiness remains. The same readiness, as we have heard, remains on the American side,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters.

Trump, inaugurated on January 20, 2025, declared last week Thursday he would meet Putin “immediately” to broker a peace deal, warning of escalated sanctions if Moscow prolongs the war.
Putin reciprocated Friday, lauding Trump as a “smart” and “pragmatic” leader, while speculating, “If [Trump’s] victory hadn’t been stolen in 2020, maybe there would not have been the crisis in Ukraine that emerged in 2022.”
Trump has repeatedly echoed the same sentiment.
