Who knew how police officer due for promotion wound up dead in own car?

Nigerian police officers work round the clock to keep people safe. It’s unfortunate that one of them died under these circumstances.

Corporal Agi Elias was on course to become a police sergeant but that will, unfortunately, no longer be. He’s dead.

Elias had been participating in a corporal-to-sergeant promotion programme which he successfully completed on Monday. Twenty-four hours later, he was found dead in his car, and “surrounded” by evidence that point to possible suicide.

“Preliminary investigations carried out so far revealed that tablets and some poisonous substances littered around his corpse, while still inside his car,” police spokesman Joseph Offor said in a statement confirming Elias’ death.

The police said Elias, who was attached to Safer Highways Patrol in Lagos, was found dead in his car in Ikeja by 7:30 a.m. on Tuesday.

“The car was parked at the entrance gate of High Barracks, Ikeja,” the police spokesman said.

“Elias, until his sudden death, was attached to Safer Highway Patrol, Lagos but on Corporal to Sergeant promotion course at Police Training School (PTS), Ikeja.

“The aforesaid course came to an end November 9, 2015,” Offor said.

While Elias’ body had been deposited at a morgue, the police said they will get to the bottom of what resulted in his death.

“The investigation of the case has been taken over by the homicide section of SCID, Yaba, with a view to ascertaining the cause of his death,’’ the police spokesman said.

However, the findings of preliminary investigations suggest the police officer may have taken his own life.

“But that could be proven untrue as anybody could have planted that ‘evidence’ on the corpse,” an anonymous police source told Newsroom on Wednesday.

“Whatever, or whoever ‘killed’ Elias remain a mystery and I’m sure my colleagues (police investigators) will get to the end of this,” he said.
