JUST IN: Buhari approves N365bn arms purchase to fight “totally defeated” Boko Haram insurgents
Few years after funds dedicated to fight against insurgency was misappropriated by the office of National Security Adviser, President Buhari has approved another $1bn (N365bn) for same purpose.
Sambo Dasuki, the then security adviser to former President Goodluck Jonathan, had received $2.1bn from the NNPC for the procurement of arms to fight insurgency in 2014.
The retired Nigerian Army Colonel allegedly shared the sum among few men serving in various capacities with the government at the time.
Today, Buhari has approved another huge sum to conquer Boko Haram insurgents.
He made this known through the Minister of Defence, Mansur Dan-Ali, after a meeting with security chiefs at the Presidential Villa.
Buhari also ordered the security chiefs to intensify efforts in ensuring the release of Leah Sharibu, the Dapchi schoolgirl still being held by Boko Haram because she allegedly refused to renounce Christianity.
The new development comes as a surprise, as the Nigerian military earlier declared “total defeat” of the insurgents.
