June 12: Full result of 1993 election that would have made Abiola Nigeria’s president
Today, it is 28 years since the result of Nigeria’s fairest and freest presidential election was thrown in the gutter by the then military Head of State, Ibrahim Babangida.
But for Babangida, late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Abiola would have been Nigeria’s democratically-elected president.
The scuppering of that mandate left a bitter taste in the mouth of all Nigerians who trooped out en-masse to vote for the popular philanthropist and businessman.
The election was between Bashir Tofa of the National Republican Convention (NRC) and Abiola of the Social Democratic Party (SDP).
The results of the June 12, 1993 election, which the National Electoral Commission (NEC) declared in only 14 states, was swinging in favour of Abiola and his running mate, before Babaginda annulled the exercise.
According to unofficial results, Tofa got a total of 5,952,087 (41.64%) of votes nationwide while Abiola, running on the platform of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), scored 8,341,309 (58.36%).
The total vote cast was 14,293,396. Abiola won 19 of the 30 states, leaving Tofa with 11 states.
