India: Woman refuses to breastfeed premature baby because she looks like an “alien”
A woman in India has refused to accept and cater for her baby girl because the prematurely delivered infant “looks like an alien.”
She won’t hold the baby in her hands or even breastfeed her, The Express reports.
The 28-year-old mother was reportedly delivered of the baby girl at a government-run hospital in Patna district of Bihar, in eastern India yesterday.
She had been born with a rare genetic condition called Harlequin Ichthyosis, which happens due to an acute case of malnutrition. The condition causes thickening of the skin and facial deformities.
The devastated parents have labelled the baby a curse.
“I have no idea how did this happen. Me and family are completely devastated. I am in shock as I was really looking forward to becoming a mother of a healthy child, be it a girl or a boy,” the mother said.
Doctors have said that the baby girl wouldn’t survive for long as none of her organs have developed properly. Only one in 10million babies with such birth conditions survive, the experts say.
Several locals reportedly thronged the hospital to have a glimpse of the “evil” child.
