Independence Day: South Africans join Nigerian students in million youth anti-victimisation march

As Nigeria celebrates her 56th Independence Day Anniversary, her students are on the streets protesting against the highhandedness of varsity administrations.

They are also voicing their displeasure at “anti-education” government policies.

The demonstration, conveyed by the Alliance of Nigerian Students against Neoliberal Attacks (ANSA), is supported by people in faraway South Africa.

Recall South African students are also protesting against planned hike in school fees.

The Nigerian demonstration began 8a.m. in Ikeja, Lagos.

Rustication and “fraud” galore:

  • 11 students suspended from Yaba College of Technology (YabaTech) over February protest
  • 25 rusticated by from Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko (AAUA) over protest
  • 11 University of Lagos (UNILAG) students rusticated for protesting against bad living conditions on campus
  • 2 suspended from Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU)
  • 56 medical students “fraudulently” denied admission into UNILAG Medical College

Demonstrators, insisting that “civil disobedience is a right”, demand the varsities concerned to reverse their decisions.

They also demand the Nigerian government, as recommended by the United Nations, allocate 26% of its annual national budget to education.

They also want the government to forget about selling the country’s national assets.
