In Lagos, man burns 5-yr-old daughter’s eyes, private part with hot iron
A five-year-old girl has reportedly gone blind after her dad burnt her face with an iron.
The man who is already in police nest reportedly got angry after the little girl slipped while trying to dispose faeces into a latrine, pouring the waste on the floor.
The man, a mechanic, then descended on the girl battering her face and private part with a hot iron.
“The mechanic had a quarrel with his wife and divorced her in 2013 when the girl was just two years old. On that Monday, he asked her to go and dispose of her faeces in a potty in a latrine at the backyard of the house. But the area was slippery and the girl fell, splashing the faeces on the floor,” a neighbour told Punch.
“The father became angry and got a hot iron. He began to beat her with the hot surface of the iron until the girl’s face became swollen. We tried to caution him, but he would not listen. That was how the matter got to the police,” she added.
Due to the delicate nature of the case, the commissioner of Police, Mr. Fatai Owoseni, had directed that the case be transferred from the Ikotun Police Division to the Gender Unit at the command headquarters, Ikeja.
The case was also reported to the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Response Team, which is working with the Child Protection Unit of the state Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation to get a shelter for the little girl.
The police is making effort to find the mother of the victim who is currently receiving treatment in the hospital due to the severity of the burns. She will be transferred to protective custody when she full recovers.
The police assured the people that the accused will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.
