IGP moves to reduce proliferation of firearms, calls for voluntary surrender of weapons

The newly appointed Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu has doubled down  on his effort to tackle the issue of firearms proliferation in Nigeria as he moves to reduce the menace.

This is coming after intelligence report revealed that there is an alarming number of illicit weapons in the possession of citizens across the country, which has also given rise to criminal activities and  negative threat.

He called on Nigerians who are harbouring illegal weapons to voluntarily surrender them to the police station or any public armoury nearest to them. The memo indicates that there will be dire consequences for defaulters who are caught with illegal weapons.

To further curtail the spread of guns ending up in the wrong hands, the IGP has placed an embargo on the issuance of new licenses for designated arms. He also advised all Nigerians to use the open window of arms return to do right thing to avoid having a run in with the law.

The police has declared that it is planning to start a nationwide Joint Arms Mopping up Operation to retrieve all illegal weapons and prosecute offenders accordingly.
