“I steal because top government officials steal” – Robbery suspect
Two robbery suspects arrested by operatives of the Niger State Police Command has said they engage in crime because many politicians steal in Nigeria.
One of the suspects, Shehu Bida, said he would go back to stealing if released as the government has provided no job.
Bida and his accomplice, Bello Mallam, 20 and 18 years of age respectively, were trailed and arrested in Talba Estate, Bida town in the Bida Local Government Area of the state.
They had robbed one Mohammed Mohammed of the sum of N7,400 and two handsets valued at N9,000.
The suspects were accused of inflicting machete injuries on their victim before dispossessing him of his valuables. They also attempted to rape his daughter.
Bida, during a parade of the suspects by the police, said: “Many people are stealing in the country, including top government officials. People are dying of hunger and there is no job. What else do you expect me to do other than stealing?
“If am discharged by the police, I will still go back to rob people. The country is in a bad situation,” the suspect said unrepentantly.
The state’s Police spokesperson, Muhammad Abubakar, has said the suspects would be charged to court at the end of investigation.
