How Showmax Subscribers Can Stream EPL Matches With Low Data Rate

Opeoluwa Filani speaking on New Showmax

Although over 450 million Africans possess smartphones, very few of them have access to video streaming platforms like Showmax. In a press briefing to announce the new Showmax, Opeoluwa Filani, Showmax’s General Manager, has revealed their plans to widen the market by ensuring easy access to streaming services from many angles.

The General Manager revealed this during his presentation as he unveiled the streaming platform’s latest feature, which allows its users to access the application with 40 MB per hour and an estimated 1 Gigabyte for a full day of streaming African content, including its latest feature, the English Premier League.

According to Statista, In 2022, “the extreme poverty rate in Africa stood at around 50% among the rural population, compared to 10% in urban areas.” The 2022 Multidimensional Poverty Index survey further revealed that 63% of persons living in Nigeria (133 million people) are multidimensionally poor. This directly translates to the fact that Africans do not have enough to pay streaming platforms, a peculiarity Showmax seems to be tackling with its current pricing and data management strategy.

“We are working with our partners so that the cost of this gig is affordable. So, over the coming months, you will be hearing us announce partnerships that allow you to bundle Showmax with actual data that will not be going from your actual data,” Opeoluwa Filani stated.

Furthermore, this affordable pricing was extended to its new plans: Showmax Entertainment, Showmax Entertainment Mobile and Showmax Premier League.

Powered by SuperSport and made for mobile users, Showmax Premier League will become Africa’s first Premier League mobile streaming service, with all 380 games offered live for N2,900 a month. Showmax Entertainment on mobile costs N1,200 a month, while the Showmax Entertainment plan is priced at N2,500 per month.

“Africa is incredibly important to the Premier League and our clubs; 20% of TV audiences on any given matchday come from Africa,” says Richard Masters, Premier League CEO. “We are delighted with this Showmax initiative, which puts the Premier League in your pocket at a new price point so that millions more can enjoy our fantastic competition.”

The new Showmax is set to go live on January 23, 2024, and no fewer than 21 new Showmax Originals will launch in February alone, including five Nigerian Originals, including Free Man, a documentary series about the apprenticeship system in the East.
