How a female police officer, Lovender Elekwachi was killed by her male colleague during lockdown enforcement
A compassionate police sergeant, Lovender Elekwachi who was serving at Eneka Division in Rivers state was on Thursday shot dead by her male colleague, Sergeant Bitrus Osaiah while on traffic duties at Eneka roundabout.
According to eyewitnesses, the tragic incident occurred when sergeant Osaiah who is attached to the Rivers Task Force on Decongestion was trying to enforce movement restriction against some women who came out to sell some wares at Eneka.
Sergeant Elekwachi who hails from Ozuzu, Etche LGA of the state was reportedly trying to appeal with her colleagues against destroying the wares of the defiant traders when a gunshot from sergeant Osaiah struck her, killing her on the spot.
Rivers Police Command noted in a statement that Osaiah has been arrested, disarmed, and undergoing Orderly Room Trial.
“Two other members of the Task Force have also been arrested and being questioned. The Hilux vehicle belonging to the Task Force has been impounded,” Rivers Police spokesman, Nnamdi Omoni disclosed.
Omoni revealed further that the Commissioner of Police, CP Joseph G. Mukan, has ordered investigations into the matter to unravel the circumstances that led to the sergeant’s death.
Sergeant Elekwachi is the second person to die in the hands of overzealous taskforce operatives since the COVID-19 lockdown began in Rivers state. The first victim was a bureau de change staff who was killed at Presidential Bustop along Port Harcourt-Aba expressway, Port Harcourt.
The body of the deceased sergeant has been deposited in the mortuary according to the police.
“The CP appeals for calm, pending the outcome of the investigation, promising that justice must be served in the circumstance,” Omoni added.
