You may not want to believe it, but that’s the president of Tanzania dressed casually, wearing a hat and gloves, and doing what? Picking up rubbish in the country’s main city, Dar es Salaam.

Newly elected President John Magufuli, Wednesday morning, cancelled the country’s usually elaborate Independence Day Celebrations and ordered his countrymen to clean-up their neighbourhoods.

But he didn’t stop at that. He joined hundreds of people to clean up the streets in the country’s main city.

The scene was replicated across the country, with schools and shops remaining shut as people swept streets, pruned trees, and tidied up their areas, the BBC reports.

Magufuli had, last month, described spending huge sums of money on independence celebrations when “our people are dying of cholera’ as shameful.

He was elected president in October and he resumed office November 5, 2015. He is Tanzania’s fifth president.

BBC says it is not a common scene in Tanzania, we say it is not a common scene in Africa..
