Gunmen Kill 10 Ebonyi Indigenes During Town Meeting in Anambra
At least 10 persons have been confirmed dead after gunmen attacked a town union meeting of Ebonyi indigenes in Ogboji community, Orumba South LGA of Anambra state.
The victims had gathered on Monday for their routine monthly town union meeting when gunmen stormed the venue and opened fire at close range.
Confirming the incident, Anambra police spokesperson Tochukwu Ikenga said the attackers arrived in two sport utility vehicles (SUVs) and shot at the attendees “unprovoked.”
“The victims were rushed to the hospital and regrettably, 10 (ten) people were confirmed dead,” Ikenga said.
“The bodies have been deposited in the morgue.
“Meanwhile, the police-led security team has taken over the scene and are working on necessary information to arrest the perpetrators.”
The Ebonyi state government, however, claimed 13 of its indigenes were killed in the attack.
In response, Ebonyi governor Francis Nwifuru called on Anambra state governor Chukwuma Soludo to launch an immediate investigation into the killings.
“Such barbarism has no place in modernity and state arsenals will be deployed to unmask the perpetrators of the bloody killings,” Nwifuru said in a statement issued by his chief press secretary, Monday Uzor.
“The administration in Ebonyi State remains committed to protecting the lives and property of Ebonyi people both at home and in the diaspora.”
He also appealed for calm, urging Ebonyi residents not to take laws into their own hands.
