“Governor Fayose’s fate to be determined by court”- EFCC clarifies contentious tweet

The EFCC has reacted to the tweet its official Twitter handle sent out in the wake of Dr Kayode Fayemi’s emergence as Ekiti State governor-elect on Saturday.

The tweet, which has since been deleted, was directed at outgoing governor of the state, Ayo Fayose, threatening to reopen the N1.3 billion poultry project case file against him after the expiration of his tenure.

Many commentators observed that the tweet betrayed the non-partisanship of the EFCC in the political contest in Ekiti.

The commission has, in a statement on Monday, said the purported tweet does not represent its views as a law enforcement organization. It said it was not involved in the election and had no reason to gloat over the political misfortune of any candidate.

“While it is true that there is a subsisting criminal charge against Governor Fayose, the fate of the charge will be determined by the Federal High Court, Ado Ekiti, at the expiration of his tenure, not the EFCC,” the commission said.
