Girl, 9, sets fire to bedroom after failing to properly stub out cigarette

Thankfully the smoke was noticed in time for the family to step out, but their home in the Austrian city of Salzburg still suffered “considerable” damage.

The nine-year-old girl, Wednesday night, went into an attic bedroom to secretly smoke a cigarette.

She stubbed it out on her bedroom wall and left the glowing butt in her bed after which she went to sleep in her mother’s room, along with her siblings aged two and 11, The Local reports.

It was her brother who was first awakened by a strong smell of burning. He then woke his mother who discovered clouds of smoke coming from the empty attic bedroom.

She called the fire brigade after leaving the apartment with her children.

According to reports, firemen were able to control blaze. And they found a melted lighter and mobile phone in the children’s bedroom during examination.

The girl then reportedly admitted she had been smoking a cigarette.

It was a huge relief no one was injured in the fire but police said the damage to the apartment is considerable..
