Fire consumes 31 shops at Gumi market in Kaduna
Traders in Barkin Dogo area of Kaduna experienced a heart-wrenching scenario early Wednesday morning as ravaging fire destroyed 31 shops at Shaikh Gumi market.
The market which sells mostly food items was completely burnt, and a whole lot of stock were wiped out. Cassava and maize flour sellers were reported to be the most affected in the incident.
Circumstances surrounding the fire outbreak is still unknown, but most of the traders believe it must been caused by electrical fault.
After the incident, the chairman of the cassava sellers association in Bakin Dogo, Alfa Husaini called on the government to render assistance to the traders.
“We lost everything in the fire, only God can help us because we don’t really know where to begin. About 31 shops were affected and most of the owners are women,” he said.
He further stated that the incident is sad and prayed for recovery.
