Ghana: 20 dead as trees fall on students, fun seekers

No fewer than twenty fun seekers fell victims to a tragic incident after trees fell on them during a storm in Ghana on Sunday.

The affected persons, comprising of students and tourists, were on a trip to the Kintampo waterfalls, AFP reports.

Eighteen died on the spot while two others died at the hospital. Eleven others are said to be recovering.

The Wenchi Senior High School students were swimming at the popular tourist destination, when the “unusual” incident occurred.

One of the school administrators in charge of the trip was among those hospitalised, reports say.

“They were swimming in the river when there was a storm, a windy atmosphere that had uprooted some of the trees and they had fallen on some of them — those who were apparently swimming,” Ghana National Fire Service spokesman, Prince Billy Anaglate, said.

The victims are being treated at the Kintampo Municipal hospital.
