Attempts by wildlife officials to drive elephants away from Minneriya in Sri-Lanka resulted in a stampede from which many villagers and tourists fled, reports say.

It is not clear whether the journalist was filming the stampede or running for dear life when one of the angry elephants attacked him and trampled on him.

Police said Ratnayake was severely injured by the heavy tromps he received from his mammoth assailant.

He was admitted to the Hingurakgoda Hospital where he died from his wounds on Tuesday morning.
