Former president’s son sentenced to jail for stealing N307,000 phone

In what is a rare occurrence in Africa, the son of a former president in Zambia will cool his heels in prison for eight months for stealing a mobile phone.

Frederick Chiluba Jr, son of the country’s former leader Frederick Chiluba, was found guilty of stealing a Samsung S7 edge, which was valued at $843 (about N307,000), last year.

Chiluba Jr was said to have dispossessed a woman, Brenda Chisha, of the mobile device on September 2, 2017. The court heard that he traded the device for drugs in a notorious slum in Lusaka.
