Former Gombe Muslim students’ leader jailed for dubiously obtaining N840,000 from society

Muhammad Maikudi Yusuf, a former Amir of the Muslim Students Society of Nigeria, FCE, Gombe branch, has been sentenced to one month imprisonment for refusing to refund money borrowed from the society’s account.

Maikudi had, sometimes in 2015, collected the sum of N840,000 from the society’s account through one Muhammed Bello.

Bello was at the time the treasurer and Maikudi signed an undertaking to refund the money after some few weeks; but failed after several promises.

The former Amir of the MSSN, FCE, Gombe branch, as well as former Amir of Gombe Area Unit of the same society, was petitioned by one Bilyaminu Abdullahi, Secretary of the society.

He was arraigned by the EFCC on one count charge bordering on cheating today.

Judgment was pronounced by Justice Abubakar Jauro of the Gombe State High Court.

Maikudi was first arraigned on 5th February, 2018 where he pleaded not guilty to the charge read against him.

In view of that development, the prosecution counsel, A. M. Labaran applied for a date of trial which was adjourned to today for trial.

The Edo State Council of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has refuted allegations by its national secretariat implicating the Edo State Government in the raid of the labour house in the state. Acting State Chairman, Bernard Egwekhide, and Acting State Secretary, Kingsley Ireotoi, issued this rebuttal in a statement on Monday. The statement emphasized that claims of police officers storming the labour house were entirely baseless. “This is to deny the claim by the NLC national secretariat that the Edo State Government forcefully broke into and ransacked the Edo State Labour House. “Instead, the police officers seen in a video shared by the former chairman, Comrade Odion Olaye, were stationed at the premises upon the request of the congress leadership to safeguard the building and its properties. “There is a long-standing cordial relationship between the Edo State Government and the various labour unions, including the NLC. Recently, there was a meeting between the state government and labour representatives aimed at addressing irregularities in the minimum wage (administrative wage) implemented by the previous administration. “Furthermore, the Edo State Government has never engaged in any acts of vandalism or intimidation against labour unions or their properties. We believe such allegations are intended to tarnish the image of the state government and sow unnecessary discord between the government and the labour unions," the statement read. The state council went on to challenge the national secretariat to prove its allegations if otherwise.

At resumed hearing today, the prosecution counsel, Zarami Muhammad informed the court that the matter was slated for hearing and his witnesses were in court. But, the defence counsel, Musa Bala told the court that his client will change his plea.

The charge was read to him again and he pleaded guilty.

In his judgement, Justice Jauro found the accused guilty as charged and sentenced him summarily to one month imprisonment.

However, considering the plea of his counsel having refunded the proceed of the crime (N840,000) as well as being a first time offender and a bread winner of his family, Maikudi was given an option of N5,000.
