Devastating Floods in Bauchi Leave 24 Dead, ₦22bn in Damages

Recent floods in Bauchi State have claimed the lives of at least 24 people and displaced over 122,000 households across 16 local government areas.

According to the State Government, this year’s disaster has caused losses exceeding ₦22 billion.

During a press briefing following an emergency executive council meeting, Hajara Wanka, Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster highlighted the extensive damage.

“We have 163 people severely injured, 12 major roads cut off, 52,035 houses destroyed, and 178 electric poles collapsed,” she said. “The flood has also claimed 11,183 livestock.”

The commissioner added that the government has formed a high-powered committee to assess the damage and ongoing risks, as the rainfall continues.

“We are working closely with the ministries of health and education to evaluate the impact on schools and health facilities,” Wanka noted.
