“Electricity has improved in Nigeria in the past year” – Babatunde Fashola

There has been significant improvement in power generation in Nigeria since the past year, according to Mr. Babatunde Fashola, the Minister of Power, Works and Housing.

Fashola, who was speaking in commemoration of his first year in office on Friday night, expressed satisfaction in the progress made so far by his administration, though promising more.

He, according to NAN, said that by achieving a record high 5074MW of electricity generation, the nation has enjoyed considerable improvement in the last 12 months.

For the ‘super’ minister, the race to bring electricity into every household is however still a long one, with the government’s battle against agitators to put an end to the destruction of power generation outlets still ongoing, having lost about 3000MW of electricity to vandalism.

Many homes are yet to get prepaid meters, but the minister appealed for patience from electricity consumers, noting that the privatisation of the sector is only three years old.

A positive, as noted by Fashola, is that 800 containers of imported power generation and distribution components stranded at the ports for between three and eight years, have been released.
